There is nothing more detrimental to a person’s growth and wellbeing than fear, ignorance, confusion, and doubt.
Previously we spoke on Fear and Doubt.
Today, we will examine Ignorance.
Ignorance as it is used here is not the equivalent to its normal use nor its definition in any English dictionary. Ignorance as I use it here has its root in India, Nepal and Tibet. Because there is no direct translation, I am reduced to periphrasis. In English, the word ignorance means “the state or fact of being ignorant : lack of knowledge, education, or awareness.”1
We are translating Ignorance from the Sanskrit word “Avidyā”, and the Tibetan “ma rigpa”. These have a much deeper meaning than a simple lack of knowledge. Avidyā means literally, “to knowingly not see, and knowingly not know” while Vidyā is “to knowingly see and know.”
Thus the meaning of Ignorance as used here is an act, a verb. It is the action of willful ignorance. It is placing one's hands before one's eyes to prevent one from seeing. It is self-censorship.
What is fundamental to being Ignorant is not recognizing the unity of all life. The slicing up and categorizing of life through the intellect, and the forgetting or disregarding of the singularity of existence makes the basis for Ignorance, which is the first step into suffering, as it is the veering away from clear awareness of the nature of life, or as the Buddha said, “Right Mind.”
Thus, to be Ignorant is to willfully ignore the true nature of life. To extrapolate a little further, I would say Ignorance will be present anytime a man ignores the truest form of himself in any moment.
In my life, I have had uncounted moments of ignorance. For half of my life at least, I existed predominantly within a state of Ignorance. To varying degrees since I discovered meditation and unraveled myself I have experienced flashes of Ignorance and have continually unfolded more and more of my deeper underlying Ignorance.
Ignorance has led me to act upon the notion that my ego, my persona, was the dominant and fullest extent of what I was. I believed that I was an independent feature in an apathetic empty space that periodically bumped into other similarly independent features. This, though a short lived part of my younger life, was ripped to shreds and left bare and revealed in its hollowness when I realized, not intellectually but with empathy and intuition and phiosophy, that everything is connected on a fundamental level. There is no physicality to anything.
When I began to meditate, I started realizing the nature of life in a direct and experiential manner. Rather than bending and shaping my logic or categorizing anything at all, I began to exist within the very real connectivity that I had previously become aware of in inspiration. I could touch the infinite.
My meditations went deeper. Hours of Dhyana (sitting meditation) turned into days, then weeks. I exited the illusion of the ego and swam in the infinite. The grace that entered my life after this was beyond compare to any other experience. Because I shed my Ignorance by letting go of the delusions and Illusions that grasped at my mind, I was able to be absolutely unaffected by the fetters and tribulations of the world. For years, I existed in a blissful state.
I did not lose my ignorance entirely though. I still experienced the ego. I still encountered limits to my own convictions. I still saw the boundaries of my own creation that separated me from the infinite. The difference was that I was now aware of them. I was able to enter a meditative state, a unified state, or Yoga, with ease and grace and in any environment.
Once I was aware of the boundaries of my existence, I had no choice but to lean against them. Now, I am still leaning against the boundaries, not exerting any real effort, just leaning, letting go, and dropping into ever expanding reality.
Ignorance = To ignore.
Willful disregard for what you know to be true, though perhaps have covered up with dense layers of the ego. Structuring ones persona consciously can only happen when one understands their ego in great detail. The millieu of ailments of the mind that we see today are directly correspondent to the lack of Vidyā.
Much of the problems we face today as a species are created by our attachment to ego and persona and the illusion that they are the ultimate reality.
In fact, it is the Ego and Persona that are the most illusory and intangible of aspects of our existence. The Persona is the mask we wear for others to appear as only our most positive traits. The Ego (“I” in Latin) is the total expression of our character. It is the distinction between me and you, I and other, the boundary of myself and everything that is not myself. The process of enlightenment fundamentally involves clearly recognizing the illusion of the separation and breaking free from Ignorance and unconscious attachment to the Ego, the identity.
When free of unconscious attachment to categorization of life, we do not lose our Ego, but instead become masters of it. We can mold ourselves consciously, because we understand what we are entirely. We know what is me and what is other and we know that it is all fiction.
Many people have experienced ego death during psychedelic experiences, or during near death experiences. Ego death is a rapid expansion of awareness that grants the one experiencing it a clear window into the unified consciousness. It is a moment of great clarity and it often leaves incredibly powerful impressions upon the experiencer. The artwork created from these experiences can only show the slightest aspect of the magnificence of the experience, but for those who have not experienced it, it often can be moving for the imagery speaks to the greater reality that exists just outside the boundary of their identity.
An addictive personality might be motivated to attempt to replicate the experience with more substances or other means. A healthy response would be to alter one's daily habits and behaviors to better reflect the insights found in the experience. Having done this with great integrity, Fortitude and an iron will, one might find themselves harnessing their ego and mastering their mind. Meditation is the first, last, fundamental, and ultimate key for this process to succeed.
A very basic example of Ignorance is when we choose to disregard the inner voice that reminds us of the righteousness/unrighteousness of our actions. It is not a question of morality or ethics (which are constructs of man), but of righteousness (a construct of God and Nature). Deeper truths that beckon us toward what is True in the unity of all existence. By growing our awareness, we become free of the burdens of our unconscious behaviors. We become masters of ourselves rather than slaves to habit and environmental triggers.
Meditation is the act of growing awareness, becoming an observer of everything that is. Through meditation we become vigilant and present. Through meditation we surrender to the deepest currents of life, and thus free ourselves from the attachment to the things that grasp and pull at our attention. No longer does that monkey mind pull the strings. Rather we are able to consciously direct our attention with clarity and deep perception.
Through meditation we remove our Ignorance layer after layer until we are free.

While I highly suggest operating entirely our of courtrooms, I also highly suggest getting familiar with courtroom operations and how to understand what is happening. How to Win in Court is one of the best resources I have found to understand court procedure and tactics.
