A Breakdown of the American Whiteness
What is a “white” man?
What is a “black” man? What qualifies one to be either? Is it a particular homeland that ones ancestors once lived? Is it the color of ones skin, and who decides where white becomes olive or brown becomes black? Is it a cultural affectation? Can one have pinkish skin and be black? Can a olive-skinned man be white? Does skin tone provide greater social benefits in one place or another? Is that a global phenomenon or is it more localized and distinct? What does racism actually mean? And what the hell does it mean to be white in the united States of America?
While I certainly don't agree with everything in the short article below, Audrey Smedley does point out some of the key components of the development of the usage of “white” and “black” to refer to race.
Black and White are NOT races, just as red and yellow are NOT races. Again, we must understand the origins of the word to understand what the word means. How it came to be and what it was meant to describe. By understanding the past we may understand our present.
So, by understanding that the root of the word race refers to ancestry and kinship, and by understanding that black does not describe either, nor white, yellow or red, we must accede that the use of such ignorant descriptors is meritless. As Smedley tells us, correctly, that the use of these descriptors appeared as a result of the pro-slavery plutocrats cunningly responding to the growing abolitionist movement. She does not use those words, but granting knowledge she did not have or a platform that does not censor, gives us the ability to extrapolate upon her thought and add facts she excluded. The plutocrats, the classist oligarchs, who paid for this country before it was a country, and robbed the veterans of the American Revolution a breath after the fighting ended, like Alexander Hamilton, were, and are, the cause of “racial tensions” between people who are “white” and everyone else. It was not the general “white” population that distinguished itself from the “blacks” and “indians” and “chinese”, but the plutocrats that were fearful of the poor white population rising up and overthrowing them, and thus creating a distinction that disunified the poor, disenfranshchised, destitute, enslaved and indentured.
As I've discussed in several previous articles, the percentage of people that owned slaves in the colonies and in early America, was very small. Less than 5% of the population of the southern states owned a slave. The vast majority of slaves were owned by the plutocratic class. The oligarchs owned the massive plantations with thousands of slaves. This very small population of psychopaths owned the vast majority of all slaves in the uSA. And as Smedley agrees, the Irish, the people of my own heritage, were first utilized predominantly as slaves/indentrued servants along with the various tribes of America. In fact, indentured servants were often treated worse than slaves because the dollar value was less burdensome for an Italian or Irishman, or a Slav, (~$200-300) was significantly less than for a African slave (~$1000). Thus the Irishman would be sent to the mines and the Arfrican would pick cotton or tend the household.
So you see, the poor “white” population in the colonies began with similar treatment to the way the poor “black” treatment began. They were more similar than different. The abolitionist movement in the colonies was already active in the 17th century, prominantly among the Quakers. By 1776, the discussion for the abolishment of slavery was discussed passionately on the floor of the continental congress. The only reason slavery perpetuated at all was for economic reasons, and those were not argued solely by southerners but by the banking and manufacturing sectors, who profited greatly from the raw materials of the southern colonies/States. In 1776, the Religious Society of Friends, the official title of the Quakers, denounced slavery in every way, and mandated that any Quaker owning a slave would be disowned by the Society. Because of the Quakers efforts, slavery was abolished in Pennsylvania in 1780, just 4 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Quakers formed “The Society for the Relief of Free Negroes, unlawfully held in Bondage”, otherwise known as the first abolitionist society, in 1775. Benjamin Franklin became the president of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society (PAS) in 1787, when non-Quakers began to be accepted to join their ranks.

In case you were wondering, the people who were fighting for the freedom of African slaves and the end of slavery in general were WHITE people. The society that led the way for the abolishment of slavery across the world was led by and predominantly composed of WHITE people. It's interesting how easily the shame is placed on “whites”, when the “whites” were the originators of the philosophies and societies that led to human rights, constitutions, free market economics, and established the right to ownership of property beyond the reach of tyrants and profiteers and millionaires (as Alexander del Mar called the plutocrats).

The general population of the colonies and the early States consisted of a majority of people emigrated from Britain. The minorities were the Germans, the Irish, the Italians, the Slavs, Native Americans, the Chinese and other Asian peoples, western and central African nationalities, Mexicans, French (Northern New England and Louisiana), Spanish (Florida and Louisiana), and others.
You can pretty much draw a line between the British majority and the conglomerate minority as far as rights and treatment are considered. To varying degrees, over time, the minority races (Nationalities/regional groups/families) became evermore included in the affairs of the nation and in the society. The pace of each was different. The Irish were treated with disdain even into the 20th century, though they'd been more heavily populating the colonies earlier than many of the other races.
After the civil war in the 1860's and the emancipation proclamation, Jim Crow laws came into effect. While they singled out “black” Americans in their propogandism, in their performance, they affected the entirety of poor America. They were introduced, maintained and perpetuated by the very same lineal descent of the parasites, the plutocrats of the 18th century who bought or stole this land in equal measure. Those same plutocrats successfully undertook a coup d'é·tat by manufacturing a series of panics (runs on the banks leading to depressionary economic conditions) and cunningly gaining control of the mint of the uSA, the ability to tax the people through the institution of the private entity, the IRS, and the means to purchase the government wholesale at all times. These are the same plutocrats that funded andencouraged in every way the furtherance of eugenics, which continues today as planned parenthood, vaccine mandates, and LGBTQ… propaganda.
Was it ever the general population of “white people” that oppressed the general populations of “(enter a color here) people”¿?¿?¿?
The answer is a resounding NO!
There has only EVER been a classism, in which the controlling class has used the oldest and most simple and perhaps most successful strategy of war… Divide and Conquer.
Pit different groups against other groups by inciting them against each other even for the most inane reasons. When the most aggressive and suggestible (often the least intelligent) people on each side are engaged enough in this, it will drag the majority of each group into it as well as the wounds afflicted will inevitably reach the innocent of each side and turn the ambivalent and peaceful into sworn enemies.
If you want to conquer a people, do not bring guns drawn. Just whisper lies until nobody can recognize the truth anymore and suspects everyone around them of treachery. This is the methodology of the plutocrats.

But let us recur to the original scapegoat treated here: whiteness. If whiteness is a scapegoat, what precisely does it stand in for? What is its prototype? Is the prototype all white people, or is whiteness rather a metonym for a select group of (mostly) white people who, by virtue of the impossibility of exacting direct vengeance on them, and by virtue of their power to deflect vengeance onto another, have managed to escape vengeance? Where do “white” people come from?
There can be no direct definition of “white people” because such a thing does not exist. Nor “black people” or any of the skin tones. If you look upon the lightest skin tones and the darkest skin tones you will find that neither fit the description. Lithuanian people are quote white, and Congolese are quite black, on a relative spectrum. But neither are explicitly white or black. Spaniards are tan or darker, while Alegrians are often lighter. Greeks are olive toned, while Aboriginal Australians are dark brown. Indians range from very light skinned to very dark skinned. Chinese skin tone is yellowish-whiteish-red. I've never seen a red Native American, but I have seen varying degrees of whitish-brown to very dark.
Let's use a more specific culturally applied descriptor. “White” people being from Europe. If “whiteness” is a European trait, than we can see that skin tone is not at play. The Moors of Spain were not light skinned. Greeks and many Italiens are not light skinned. Turks are often dark skinned. What about the black Irish? So, if it not a tone of skin issue, it is a geographical one. If Roman people were “white” than was their demise at the hands of the “yellow” Mongols considered in the same light as the conquering of America by Western Eurpoan nations?
In any case, what it is that makes people “white” today seems to be any situation in which they can be used to escape ones own culpability, to allow one to shed shame that doesn't belong to them, or to identify an enemy figure for the suffering one sees around them presently. Another component is the use of whiteness to appear compassionate and superior simultaneously.
The only true identifiers of race are those of kinship. Such that one may be of Norwegian, or going back further, Saami, origin. One may be Irish, or going back further Celtic, Gael, or simply mammoth hunting, spear throwing nomad in origin. One may be Italian, or Roman in origin. One may be Tunisian or Lebanesee, or Cartheginian in origin, maybe even Tyrian. Lithuanian… Balt in origin. Russian… Cimmerian, Scythian, Sarmation, Goth or Khazarian.

Most of these original Eurpoean peoples were light skinned. (Not all as tou can clearly see) But were they “white”?
Whiteness in today's America, and from America it has expanded throughout the world to varying degrees, “white” people, or “whiteness”, has become synonymous with colonialism and conquerors. But on the grand scale, is that truly a fair assessment? Is colonialism and slavery the epitome of what European peoples have brought to the Earth?
I don't think so.
I contend that one of the greatest achievements of European people was the evolution of Free Market Capitalism. While it has never had a chance to be fully expressed as tyranny has reigned in Europe and the West in general since before Adam Smith, the idea that the people can regulate themselves without the Leviathan is an achievement itself. The creation of Constitutions, that affirm the inherant and unlimititable rights of man is another great achievement. The connecting of all the corners of the globe is another achievement. The advancement of many technologies from the water wheel to literature to mass printing of the written word are amazing achievements. The Roman aqueduct and its unique concrete that we have yet to replicate, are fantastical achievements All of these things have benefitted mankind.
On the flipside, every technological and philosophical advancement also has its evil twin. The ability for those with devious, diabolical, and malicious aims, to use those technologies for their personal gratification at the cost of others. An example of this is the connecting of the all the corners of the Earth. The use of colonialism to extract the wealth, holdings, and resources of the various peoples. This was done by use of coercion and force. “White” people were not responsible for European expansion and colonialism. Tyrants were. The indentured servant who is forced into labor in a mine, extracting resources from the land occupied by another tribe cannot be held responsible, as he is as oppressed as the tribe. If he does not abide by the oppressors demands, him and his family will suffer and may die. Multiply this thousands or millions of times and it is an easy scapegoat to say, those “white” people stole from me and oppressed me. Just as it is today, it was yesterday. The small group of willful lackeys obeying the tyrannical orders of their masters wield the axe that creates the classes.
If “white” people were responsible for all the evils of colonialism, then “black” people were responsible for the slave trade, as African slaves were not captured in nets by Europeans and thrown on slave ships, but rather were the victims of tribal conflicts internal to African nations. Africans captured Africans, and sold them to British and other European merchants, who transported them to various places, and sold them again. Only 5% of African slaves ever sold to a foreign merchant were brought to the British colonies in America. The vast majority were sold to Brazilians. Are/were Brazilians “white”? Many were were sold to the Caribbean Islands, which were held by the Spanish and Portueguese. Are the darker skinned Spanish “white”?

Slaves, Servants and Capitalism
If “whiteness” is synonymous with European colonialism, what is synonymous with Mongolian expanansionism, or internal African slavery (still existant), or the utter brutality of the seemingly endless internal wars in China's long history? When Mao killed by starvation and genocide up to a hundred million people in China, was that an expression of “yellowness”? Is all the murdering, pillaging and raping of the Comanche against other tribes because they were “red”? If all of the bloody history of humankind is a result of the depredations of the “white” people, why and how did European colonialism extend mostly within Eurpoean boundaries for millenia?
Are the Irish responsible for their own enslavement and mass torture by their English neighbors simply because they are “white” as well? Did they only become “white” when they began to flee to the British colonies in America and try to live and be prosperous as best as possible? We're they “white” when they faced grueling working conditions in only the most difficult and dangerous jobs because the American Party “Know Nothing Party” barred them from work because they despised Catholics and non-American born people. Many died in the ships that carried the starving people to America and Canada. While they weren't sold by their neighbors into slavery like the Africans were, they still faced a long train of abuses going back hundreds of years. In the 1840's, over a million Irish people died due to starvation during the potato famine, which was a direct result of British coercion and tyranny. The people fled to America and did what they had to for centuries to carvw out their place in the new land. Today, The Irish are assimilated, not because of skin pigment, but because of attitude, principle, social cohesion, and balls. By the way, while these qualities are great, I'd rather the uniqueness of the Irish had remained culturally dominant in their minority group, rather than their assimilation into Americanism. Retention of our cultural roots makes us special, gives diversity strength, and brings more color to life. I say this for all the various groups whatever skin or location they happen to have or be located in. Our lineal familial culture is personal and gives us connection to a deeper identity.
What about those like my family, who came to the uSA from Ireland in the late 19th century in the hopes of a better life. They did not partake in slavery or colonialism. They were simple people trying to live as best they could under harsh conditions. Were they “white”, or perhaps were they Irish. And when they arrived in their new home, were they conferred responsibility for the crimes of others simply because of skin tone, or were they Irish-Americans, struggling to enhance their lives for their progeny?
Up until the 17th century, over 90% of Europeans were peasants. They did what they were told, or suffered the consequences. Beginning in the 16oos, English peasants and merchants were able to greatly enhance their lives through the sale of cotton, through colonialism and mercantilism, to the rest of Europe, especially France. The increase in individual prosperity, led to the expansion of the notion of individual rights and private property. Many of those who migrated to the British colonies in America were those pioneering these philosophies and phiosophies. By 1775, with the Whigs in political dominance in the colonies, the idea of servitude to the mercantislistic, parasitical state was unbearable. The Whigs were free marketeers, Libertarian by modern standards, or perhaps even more stringently anarchistic. They wanted to be free of central banks and foreign control. The people who pioneered the principles of Freedom through private property and natural rights were taking their power back. Or so they thought. It only takes a cursory glance at the historical record to conclude that the parasitical class manipulated the situation to create a new power structure that only appeared to provide greater liberties. But the appearance did form a long term effect. The people at various times stood their ground and demanded their status as free people. Never gaining the ideal, over time slavery returned in full effect, in its novel manifestation. Debt slaves. The 14th amendment conferred debt and perpetual servitude upon all the colors and creeds of America.
Today, “whiteness” is used as a cop out to defer guilt, responsibility, and to undermine social cohesion that would inevitably result in a turning over of the power structure of an overtly tyrannical, subtly applied, power dynamic.
What distinguishes “white” people from other “white” people?
Are we all the same? Are those people with light skin a carbon copy of the light skinned neighbor? Are the Austrians of the 20th century mirrors of the Finnish of the same? What about modern “whites”? Are we constituted of the same inherant or culturally structured qualities?
Well, up until the period of 900-1400 AD, in most of Europe, the Religions of the region were many and varied. But during that period, Christianity spread across Europe in a wildfire of conversion. The various nations converted for political and economic reasons, and by extension the societies, being flooded by Christendom, through the mandates of their governments, also converted. Some places held out until as late as the 20th century, but they were significant on the grand scale. Thus, Christianity conquered the “whites”. But even within that umbrella, a multitude of variations upon the theme developed, such as orthodoxy in the east and protestantism and the Anglican church is the west. Societies putting their own flavor into the mix of their mandated belief system.
In dress, language, customs, arrangements of governance, migratory patterns, stylings and building methods of homes, professions, classes and societal organization, and values, the various tribes and nations of peoples across Europe were as diverse and unique as that of most any other place with as many geographical boundaries, seasons, arable to non-arable land divisions, and other resources and limitations.
Hollander farmers liked their clogs, while their neighbors, the Norse Vikings sailed on ships to pillage what they needed. The Finnish chased Reindeer with whistles and sleds, while the Germans made poetry with alliterative verse, which continues today amongst the Finns. While there are definitive unifying roots for Germanic peoples, like the Teutonics and Goths, the Nordic peoples, the Franks, and the Saxons and Alemanni, there are also those without that common root amongst Europeans, such as the Celtic, Iranic, Baltic, and Slavic peoples. Each of these has its own lineological origins. So, which one is “white”¿?¿?
Are people of Hebrew descent “white”? They are not European, though they are prominently involved in European affairs throughout the millenia. In fact, many of Hebraic descent have funded the various colonializations and conquests of Europe. But they not European. They are Canaanite, or middle eastern. They might be Ottoman at one time, or Spaniards, when the Sephardics lived amongst the “Black” Moors of Spain.
The distinctions amongst light skinned peoples are innumerable. They are differentiated in a thousand thousand different ways. Their similarities grow over time, just as it has happened for the entire world, so that today we all are globalized and corporations and mass produced in factory schools and indoctrinated. But our roots are still unique, and not too distant. Recent ancestors were not globalized. Recent ancestors were a race according to kinship not melanin.
